Following every reporting juncture, we continue our work of analysing our data and student performance and further developing and implementing strategies for improvement in our teaching practice to improve student outcomes each term. I encourage all students and families to be a part of conversations with staff concerning your student’s performance. If you have not set up an email discussion link with teachers I encourage you to do so. Your assistance with ensuring students are completing homework, drafts and final assessment to meet due dates is vital in ensuring that students have every opportunity to perform well. Your input in how your student learns best, assists staff to plan and individualise their learning needs.
Parent and Teacher interviews are also occurring on the afternoon of 26 July. This is an ideal opportunity to discuss face-to-face with staff how your student is progressing in their studies. Please discuss your student’s report with your child:
• Has their academic progress improved from term 1 to end semester 1?
• Did they achieve an A for behaviour? Are they being distracted or not engaged in their learning?
• Are they maximising their effort in class?
Working together we can continue to maximise the learning opportunities for your student and improve their academic performance.
Scooter and Student safety:
Scooters can be a quick and easy form of transport to and from school. While on bus duty we have noted a few close calls of students on scooters riding too fast and not being considerate of other users on our footpaths. We do not want to see any injury to students on scooters, or to those that may be hit by one. We want all our students to be safe on their way to and from school.
Some points for our scooter riders to remember:
• E-scooter riders must wear an approved bicycle helmet at all times – hire scooter or not!
• E-scooter riders are prohibited from riding on any road with a speed limit of more than 50km/h, or any road (including 50km/h zones) with a centre dividing line. They are only to be used on local roads or shared pathways and footpaths etc.
• Only one person is allowed on an e-scooter at any time.
• E-Scooter riders are prohibited from using a mobile phone while riding the device.
• Unaccompanied riders must be at least 16 years old.
• Riders between the ages of 12-16 years must be supervised by an adult. (relevant in a high school setting)
• Riders under the age of 12 are forbidden to operate an E-Scooter.
Please slow down around congested areas and watch for students and members of the public walking on our shared footpaths.
Kokoda Challenge:
The school community followed our Challenge walkers last weekend on our Facebook page. We were successful in getting four of our seven students past the 96km finish line in just under 32 hours. Three unfortunately succumbed to injury and fatigue. This is a fantastic event to test mind and body of both students and staff, and I thank everyone who was involved. If you haven’t seen the photographs or videos from last weekend, it is worth a look. We will be speaking with and recruiting our year 11 students for next year’s event over the next couple of weeks.
QUT Visit and Careers EXPO:
Our students were able to listen to some presenters from QUT during the week. They discussed not only university courses but different pathways that students may wish to take during and at the end of their secondary schooling. This was followed by our Careers EXPO where students were able to mingle and ask questions with presenters working in the many fields and careers that were represented. Our year 10 students were also given the opportunity to discuss what subjects they may wish to study in year 11 and 12 and link these with the careers on offer during the day. Students took full advantage of this EXPO to consider their futures.
If you have any questions or queries regarding Hervey Bay State High School, your student or their schooling, please email enquiries@herveybayshs.eq,edu.au and we will be in contact with you.
