At Hervey Bay State High School, our STEM students focus on real‐world application, with a highlight on sustainability. STEM isn't about toys for our students, it is about creating a better future for communities by using technology to make creative solutions to real world problems. Students in our STEM Academy gain knowledge and skills to make them the shapers of the future.
Program Details
The STEM Academy provides students with a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics learning opportunities from year 7 through to year 10. These subjects build the foundation knowledge required to complete year 11 and 12 General Engineering (Systems).
Students in the Year 7 STEM Academy take part in a non-assessable enrichment program. This program includes many opportunities for problem-solving, collaborative group learning and hands-on activities. It also allows students to develop skills which can then be used in the year 8-10 program.
In years 8-10, students participating in STEM classes are provided with challenging and real-life learning experiences which also align with the Australian Curriculum.
Key Academy Opportunities
Our students are involved in working on projects such as a fully operational miniature wind farm, underwater drones for ocean floor mapping, automated farming practices, coding and robotics.
Students may also be provided with opportunities to succeed outside of the classroom. Competitions and events that STEM students have been involved in previously include:
- Mayor's Innovation Award
- AURECON Bridge Building Competition
- QCS competition
- STEM Week
Future Pathways
The STEM Academy develops students as life-long learners, so that they become:
- Creative and critical thinkers
- Effective communicators
- Active investigators
- Independent learners
- Goal-orientated
Enrolment in the STEM Academy gives students skills to be successful in academically challenging senior subjects, including General Engineering (Systems). Selection of these subjects in years 11 and 12 may provide students pathways to study Engineering, Technologies and Sciences when they have completed high school.
