The Performing Arts (Music) Academy is designed to deepen student knowledge and understanding of music theory and practice, and engages students in enriching and collaborative experiences.

The Performing Arts (Music) Academy is designed to:

  • Develop and extend students in the areas of music performance, composition and analysis.
  • Challenge and engage instrumental students who have already developed sound music reading and performance skills
  • Provide students with pathways to achieve future QCE success (through AMEB exams)
  • Provide an opportunity to create partnerships and pathways with primary school instrumental students

Program Details

The Performing Arts (Music) Academy is available to Year 7 students who wish to engage in rich and rewarding music experiences in addition to their involvement in the instrumental program. Students who apply for this program need to participate in the Instrumental Music program or play an instrument.

Instruments may include:

  • Strings (violin, cello, viola)
  • Brass (trumpet, trombone, French horn)
  • Woodwind (flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone)
  • Percussion (kit, tuned percussion, piano/keyboard)

It is highly encouraged that students in this program are a part of the school BYOx program.   This will allow students to use technology to notate their own compositions.

Key Learning Experiences

The Performing Arts (Music) Academy provides a positive learning environment for students to broaden and develop their performance, composition and musicianship knowledge beyond the expectations of the Australian Curriculum.

Individual and group performances, presentation of compositions and musicology tasks are just some of the ways that students are able to extend themselves in this program.  Students will be encouraged to develop self-reflection, self-assessment and goal setting skills in order to achieve musical excellence.

Students will also engage with the AMEB (Australian Music Examination Board) level one curriculum, developing the skills necessary to complete Grade One Theory.

Future Pathways

Enrolment in the Performing Arts (Music) Academy gives students the foundations to be successful in future arts subjects, including Music and Music Extension.   Involvement in this Program of Excellence may also assist students achieving more advanced AMEB levels (in theory, musicianship or performance) which can contribute to QCE attainment.
