Program Details
APEX (English and Humanities) is available to students in years 7 through to 10. Students enter APEX program in Year 7 after demonstrating their love of writing, passion for inquiry and ability to come up with interesting ideas through the APEX application process.
Year 7 and Year 8 APEX students work with the same teacher for English and Humanities. This allows students to integrate their learning and assessment, providing rich learning experiences and opportunities for cross-curricular extension. Teachers are also able to develop a stronger understanding of each student's capabilities and how best to extend and challenge them in the foundation years of high school.
Students have the opportunity to continue in the APEX English and Humanities program until year 10. This program offers a rigorous approach to curriculum and assessment, while also developing skills required for English in years 11 and 12.
Key Learning Opportunities
Students are provided the opportunity to participate in a range of community events to showcase their learning, including:
- annual literary competitions
- national History and Geography competitions
Students are encouraged to access real world learning opportunities and present their work to many audiences beyond the classroom. Some key experiences include:
- Designing alternative proposals for the redevelopment of the Hervey Bay Central Business District
- Presenting these proposals to the Mayor and several Councillors.
- Fieldwork excursions to investigate coastal erosion in our local area
- Creating works that are ready for publication.
