Computers and technology

Hervey Bay State High School’s Bring Your Own “x” (BYOx) program is available to all students from Year 7 to 12.  BYOx means exactly that – students bring their own compatible digital device to school, for the purpose of learning.  Innovation, technology and access to online tools and resources is essential for students today – both at home, and at school.
Hervey Bay State High School is committed to providing computer facilities to support various subjects but unfortunately no school is in a position to finance a laptop for every student to take home.  Parent contribution is essential to achieve a digitally rich 1:1 environment and provide 21st century learning for students.
Our BYOx program:
  • recognises the demand for seamless movement between school, work, home and play
  • assists students to improve their learning outcomes in a contemporary educational setting
  • supports students to become responsible digital citizens
  • enhances the teaching and learning process and achievement of student outcomes as well as the skills and experiences that will prepare them for their future studies and careers
Junior (Years 7 to 9)
Because students in the junior school have different needs to those in the senior school, we have tailored our program to suit.  We recommend tablets (iPads) or netbooks (small laptops) for students in Year 7 to 9 due to portability and ease of use.
Please note - students who have been accepted into the Year 7 APEX class for 2018 are highly recommended to have a BYOx device.
Senior (Years 10 to 12)
We encourage laptops as the preferred device for students in Years 10 to 12 as they have more diverse needs than younger students.  However, senior students can still choose to use their tablet (iPad) or netbook if they wish.  Senior students studying specialist, computer-based subjects such as Business, Digital Technologies, Graphics and similar subjects, are recommended to have a laptop.
The only devices permitted to be used at school are those that fall within the BYOx program.  No other devices are permitted.  Mobile phones and game devices are not part of the program.
It is a timely reminder that students are solely responsible for the security, integrity, insurance and maintenance of their personal device.  Technical support is not offered by the school for personally-owned devices.  Access to Education Queensland's ICT network will be provided only if the mobile device meets security requirements which at a minimum, requires that anti-virus software has been installed, is running and is kept updated on the device.
Hervey Bay State High School has had the necessary infrastructure installed to allow the connection of student personal devices.  To take part in the program, students need to return the required agreement form (signed by parents/carers), along with the payment of the yearly access fee which will allow a maximum of three devices per user.
Device Purchase
Parents/carers are able to purchase a compatible device from local retailers, as they have a wide variety of computers which we tailor our device requirements to.  Devices may also be purchased using one of the available purchase portals below.
Documentation on the BYOx program, including the Student Charter and minimum and recommended device specifications is available on this page.
