COMMUNITY
EDUCATION COUNSELLOR
Our school's Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Community Education Counsellor is Rhonda Chapman. Her role is to:
- Provide
support to education Queensland staff to support cultural
programs designed to achieve equitable educational outcomes
for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
- Develop
and support links with Education Queensland staff, parents
and the Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander community. This
insures a shared understanding of the values of appropriate
programs for students.
- Assist
in the development of programs determined by the needs of
the school which will encourage attendance of Aboriginal
Torres Strait Islander students at school.
PROACTIVE
ACTIONS ARE:
- Liaise
with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and advise
them of the value of education for their students.
- Provide
ongoing support to teachers regarding appropriate strategies
which may encourage Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander students
to make use of education.
- Support
and encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents
in their dealings with the education system.
- Liaise
with school personnel government departments outside school,
parents and the wider community involved in educational
programs.
REACTIVE
ACTIONS
- Assist
teachers by interpreting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
students behaviours and help teachers to develop appropriate
teaching strategies and intercultural communication skills.
- Assist
in the design, implementing, monitoring and evaluating appropriate
programs for Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander students.
- Assist
teachers to develop positive relationships with Aboriginal
Torres Strait Islander students.
- Liaise
with Behaviour management unit in the development and delivery
of special support programs for students.
- Work
with the local community to deal with matters relating to
education.
